What could a large painful lump on back of head be caused by?

I have a large hard painful lump on back of my head on the lower right hand side.  Should I be concerned?

It could be a "wen", a cyst that sometimes forms as normal skin secretions get trapped. I remember removing one from my wife one time after Easter dinner at the table. I don't recommend that, but you should see someone about removing it (a minor surgical procedure).
I have a cyst that's fairly small on the top of my head but this is way different. On the bottom part of my head where we have bones that stick out on both sides is where I feel it. It's almost like it's a growth on the right side bone? I would compare it to a quarter sized sphere basically... It does not necessarily seem painful to the touch or anything but I have constant headaches... I'm pretty sure it's not a cyst but could be wrong, what else could it be? I have a doctors appointment but not for over a month from now and it worries me... :(
