Vision

Posted Jan 07 2009 5:11pm

I stopped at the eye doctor today to check my prescription.  It was essentially unchanged, but he did warn me about the future.  He laid out a whole host of eye problems that men start to experience as they age - the eye loses its luster, the retina doesn't focus as well, etc.

I don't know if any studies have been done, but I would imagine that hunter-gatherers would at least maintain decent vision as they age.  Surely, the eye was built to last a lifetime, not a half of one.  I would assume that junk carbs accelerate any vision problems, but beyond that I haven't looked into this much.

A couple of new studies show that certain vitamins are important in preventing cataracts.  I also found this article that mentions hunter-gatherers and vision problems.  It points out that hunter-gatherers mostly used their vision for distance work, not necessarily sustained near work.  Therefore, people may naturally have lower endurance for close-up work like reading and time on the computer.

Whatever the causes, I'm hoping a Paleo diet keeps my eyes healthy for the years to come!
