People with adult incontinence often say the condition has a greater impact on their quality of life than diabetes or arthritis, a survey has found.
Researchers at AARP Services and UnitedHealthcare in the US polled more than 5,000 people, aged 65 and over, to shed light on the prevalence and impact of female and male incontinence . They found that more than 35 per cent of respondents were affected by adult incontinence, which was particularly common among women and obese people.
The poll also revealed that the condition often has a negative effect on people’s mental, physical and social wellbeing.
Dr Richard Migliori, executive vice president of business initiatives and clinical affairs at UnitedHealth Group, said: “Urinary incontinence is generally thought of as a physical disability. “It is clear from this study, however, that urinary incontinence affects quality of life mentally and socially, as well as physically.” The survey, which is published in Quality of Life Research, also revealed that only half of people with adult incontinence had visited their doctor about their condition, and just one in three had received treatment. Dr Charlotte Yeh, chief medical officer at AARP Services, advised: “We encourage people [aged] 65 and over who suffer from urinary incontinence to consult with their doctors and learn more about their treatment options.”
In the meantime, people may benefit from a range of incontinence products, such as incontinence pants , incontinence sheets , and specially designed incontinence pads for men .
