Unknown cause of serious pain? Help! INTENSE headache, body aches, chills, fever, sore throat, diarrhea, stiffness, eye pain?

Posted by abietta

I am a 19-year-old girl living in New Jersey. Two days ago I had a fever of 101.3 F, spontaneous sharp pains in my ear that would come on suddenly, a bad headache, chills, a slightly upset stomach and what felt like a strained muscle at the bottom of the right side of my ribcage, which would hurt badly every time I moved the wrong way or even breathed deeply.  Yesterday I took some Tylenol and felt OK for most of the day, my "strained muscle" was completely better, and apart from some minor aches and pains I was fine. Today however, I woke up with a moderately painful sore throat, an intense headache which persisted throughout the day despite my taking Tylenol, a fever of 99.6 F, the same body aches and intense chills as the first day. My throat still hurts, my temperature is high, my whole body aches, I feel as if I'm constantly switching between being way too cold and way too hot. When I bend down to pick something up or anything, head begins pulsing and feels like it's about to explode. I have a stiff neck and my eyes hurt when looking at light or even shutting them tightly. I'm taking adderall xr 25mg daily for my ADD. Two weeks ago I had four impacted wisdom teeth extracted and had two dry sockets which despite being a little sore seem to now be healing normally (after revisiting the oral surgeon). I have a lump under my armpit, which my mother, a RN, told me was a folliculitis infection. It started about a month ago as a small red bump, and then spread to be about ten or more of the same small red bumps. They were painful and all eventually came to a head and popped. Unfortunately they have now formed a boil under my arm, which was very large but seems to be shrinking now, I hope that means it's healing and not that it's just draining the bacteria into my body. I tried doing some research online, and some things I found matching my symptoms included the flu (or swine flu), meningitis, or some complication from an infection (I'm guessing from my follicular boil infection?) I've had some mild diarrhea for a few days but only slight nausea and no vomiting. I feel genuinely awful. However, I have no runny or stuffy nose, no sneezing or coughing. I have a doctor's appointment on Monday but want to get someone's opinion before then. Please help! Thank you, Abby

Hi! It lasted actually only a few days. A nurse practicioner at a CVS minute clinic told me it was probably swine flu, but i don't think it was. I never found out the real diagnosis. Did you?
not sure, but sounds like the Coxsackie virus going around. My family was so frustrated, because it took a while to figure out what it was. My 4 yr old began w/symptoms of ribcage pain on right side, fever and just felt horrible. We took her to ER, they thought she was having appendicitus. After Ultrasound, determined it wasn't.  Dr spotted a few ulcers in throat, and said its from Coxsackie virus or Herpangina(Not Herpes) and for children its the hand, foot & mouth disease. A few days later, I got symptoms with extreme achiness, especially in my chest and back. It hurt when I took a breath. Dr said I had inflammation in lung lining, called pleurisy. Very very painful. I never had a fever with it. But I did become deyhdrated and my heart rate was very high, 130, and bloodpressure was up.  Since then I got better with Ibuprofen. However woke up last night with chills and aches all over. So I'm going to dr Monday to see what's going on. At ER, they did blood work, CT scan, and EKG. Everything was normal. So they feel its a bad virus. It's been almost 2 weeks now. So this is a bad virus.
What was the diagnosis, and how long did it last?  I have almost the exact same symptoms, minus the sore throat, and the boils.  The temperature, and rib cage thing matches.  The body aches match- however the pain moved down my body by sections, however the lower rib pain when moving persists.  The temperatures were identical too.  I tested negative for swine or regular flu.  My doc said it was a virus.  But I would like to know how long it lasted, and if you got a "name" for your illness.  Thanks, Janet
