I came across a paper from earlier this year that talked about the "Australian Paradox". The study showed that as total sugars slightly decreased, the rate of obesity increased. The would cast doubt that sugar is driving the obesity epidemic.
I read through the paper, and to me the obvious change is the use of artifical sweetners. They point out that the amount of artificially sweetened beverages doubled from 1994 to 2006. And we know that artificial sweetner consumption is connected with weight gain, even though companies would never admit to to this.
So I see no paradox, only more of the same: more sugar = more obesity.
