Question: Hi, My cousin has Stiff Person Syndrome. She is 47 and had her first heart attack 10 yrs ago, another 1yr ago. She is open to natural medicine.
What can be done for her to reverse or reduce SPS and Arteriosclerosis?
Thank you for not charging for this info. You are the first one I’ve found that doesn’t.
I just want you to know how much I appreciate it.

Stiff Person Syndrome is a syndrome - meaning that there are possibly multiple factors going on at once.
First off, magnesium deficiency is likely going on. Heart attacks, general stiffness, tetany and magnesium deficiency all go hand-in-hand. Taking a potent form of Calcium/Magnesium is likely needed. Most important would be the magnesium. The best forms of magnesium are Magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate.
If your mom has stomach upset easily from magnesium, taking magnesium glycinate is the best option.
The glycine in the magnesium glycinate may also be a key component for your mom. Some Stiff Person syndrome patients have a genetic defect in a glycine receptor. This means that the body cannot effectively process glycine, which is needed as it is an inhibitory neurotransmitter to calm the brain and muscles down.
That said, if your mom is low in glycine or high in glutamate, her condition may get worse. Sometimes if the body is flooded with a nutrient, it binds to receptors that otherwise would not accept it. It is merely a concentration issue. The more ‘push’ you provide, the more likely the nutrient will bind to the defective receptor.
So increasing glycine and decreasing glutamate are things which may be of benefit.
These tests will show which amino acids she is low in and also other nutrients which she is high/low in. This is key to understanding what she needs.
It is not a cheap test but going to doctor after doctor is not the best approach to this either. What is needed is finding a doctor who understands biochemistry, environmental medicine and nutrition. I recommend to look at www.naturopathic.org to find a physician near you.
GABA is said to be low in patients with Stiff Person syndrome. Increasing GABA increases relaxation, sleep and awareness.
It is not completely defined if Stiff Person Syndrome is an auto-immune condition. It may be and your physician may offer some information here. If it is autoimmune, there is no better product than Sterol 117 to stabilize a hyperactive immune system. Sterol 117
Stiff Person Syndrome is a complicated condition and should be dealt with by working with a team of holistic-minded physicians. If not, standard medicine will only provide medications designed for pain relief and anti-depressants; neither of which address the cause of the symptoms.
