Statin Drugs and CoQ10

Posted Sep 14 2008 5:33pm

There is a long and very in depth article in Townsend's about the benefits of CoQ10 and the dangers of CoQ10 being depleted by statins.

A few excerpts:

"We are now in a position to witness the unfolding of the greatest medical tragedy of
all time - never before in history has the medical establishment knowingly created a
life-threatening [CoQ10] nutrient deficiency in millions of otherwise healthy people."
- Peter H. Langsjoen, MD

The pharmaceutical giant Merck has known for more than 15 years that statin drugs interfere with CoQ10 biosynthesis, leading to low serum levels, which cause muscles to atrophy.

According to Dr. Langsjoen, "In my practice of 17 years in Tyler, Texas, I have seen a frightening increase in heart failure secondary to statin usage: statin cardiomyopathy. Over the past five years, statins have become more potent, have been prescribed in higher dosages, and have been used with reckless abandon in the elderly and in patients with normal cholesterol levels. We are in the midst of a congestive heart failure epidemic in the U.S., with a dramatic increase over the past decade. Are we causing this epidemic through our zealous use of statins? In large part, I think the answer is yes.

The irony is that CoQ10 is most important nutrient for heart health. So statins, while trying to prevent heart disease by lowering cholesterol, actually deplete one of the most important chemicals for the heart!

If you take a statin, you really MUST take CoQ10. Jigsaw Health has a very good CoQ10. But regardless of what brand you get, you should be taking CoQ10!

Now I will say that I do believe that statins do have some benefit for short term use. More and more evidence is showing that they dramatically lower inflammation, and this may well be the real benefit of a statin. High dose, short term use may be very helpful in certain cases. But don't forget your CoQ10!
