Stabilized Rice Bran- it's been around for a long time but I'm just now learning more about this Superfood. Agoogle searchwill yield some information and websites for several brands that are currently on the market now. These websites give helpful descriptions of the manufacturing process, nutrients, benefits and features of rice bran. Of course each company has it's own particulars, so it's worth spending some time investigating before spending money on any of them. I'm told by my big health nut friend, Vicki, that it's pretty hard to find stabilized rice bran in stores, even the health food types. Here's one websitethat I found to be most valuable.
Why stabilized rice bran?
Because the bran is so quickly oxidized that it turns rancid almost immediately which pretty much prevents any sort of shelf life. Stabilizing through a process which does not use chemicals or preservatives allows the bran to make it through the processing, packaging, shipping, and marketing requirements.
Astudypublished in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, March 2002, found that participants who were given stabilized rice bran (SRB) for 60 days showed improved glucose levels in both Type 1 and Type 11 diabetes, reduced blood cholesterol levels, and reduced tryglycerides. The researchers concluded that SRB can safely be used as a nutritional supplement for diabetics and others.
How do you use it?
I have recently added this superfood to my daily routine, adding a tablespoon or 2 to protein shakes and sprinkled over cereal. In fact, it tastes good enough to eat right off the spoon, which is something I can't say about some of the other superfood products I've tried.
I'm excited to announce that one of my favorite companies,Whole Food Nation, is coming out with their own SRB product in the next week or so. They are offering it as a powder called "BIG B" which is easily added to smoothies and other drinks or recipes you already use. I'll be learning more about this product and will fill you in when details are available.
