sit ups and jump rope

I just started a kick boxing class. Intense workouts to say the least...is awesome. At the end, he has us doing several minutes of sit ups. I am getting lower back ache. Is it my technique (I prefer crunches), will I strenthen over time?

He also has us begin with jump rope. My calves are tight the next day...not enough warm up? What would be the warm up? thanks!
