Sharp, stabbing pain.

I have a sharp, stabbing pain in my lower left side right underneath my last rib. This pain becomes unbearable if I try to take a deep breath. This pain has given me trouble throughout the years, however it only shows up intermittently. Once when I was a child I had an episode where I was in so much pain I couldn't walk, but I've never experienced anything like that again. Any ideas on what it could be?
