The sealed source radiation therapy is renamed as a Brachytherapy. It is also known as endocurietherapy. This sealed source radiation therapy is type of radiation therapy where the radioactive resources are kept in placed within the area of the body organ to which radiation treatment is needed. This sealed source radiation therapy is generally utilized in the treatment to cure cancer like prostate cancer and used to cure cancers related to head and neck. This radiation therapy is also known as short distance therapy.
The sealed source radiation therapy is one of the three main types of radiation therapy. Among them, The first one is EBRT stands for external beam radiation therapy which is also called as teletherapy, the second one is sealed source radiation therapy which is also called as brachytherapy and last one is unsealed radiation therapy.
The above differentiation criterion of the radiation therapy is only the position of the radiation source i.e. internal or external. In the sealed source radiation therapy, the transformations of the radioactive substances are taken place internally.
This radiation therapy is useful for diagnosing and curing the problems of tumor. In this sealed source radiation therapy, highly powerful dosages of radiations like seeds or implants are transformed to the tumor bed. These radiation materials are conserved in a thin wire and cathode tube and these are situated directly into the body tissues, which are got affected.
In sealed source radiation therapy, radiation material like phosphorus, and palladium, cesium, iridium, iodine is used. By using the sealed source radiation therapy, we can cure the cancers of body organs like uterus, prostate, cervix, neck, breast and thyroid.
In sealed source radiation therapy, some additional methods of radiation transformation are used. These methods are interstitial, intracavitary, intraluminal, surface brachytherapy. In sealed source radiation therapy, three types of treatment options are used.
First type of sealed source radiation therapy is mold brachytherapy. In this treatment, apparent tumors are cured sealed radioactive materials, which are situated very near to the skin. In the second type of treatment named interstitial brachytherapy, the radioactive sources are placed in into the body tissues. In cancer of prostate, the insertions of cathode rays are taken place around the tumor. Lastly, in the third type of treatment in sealed source radiation therapy, radiations are inserted within a body cavity for treating disease like gynecological cancers.
