Quebec hit with 254 cases of measles since January 2011

Posted Jun 08 2011 12:00am
Quebec's director of public health is urging people to get vaccinated following an outbreak of more than 250 cases of measles in the province since the beginning of the year.

There have been 208 cases of measles reported in Quebec since May 1 and a total of 254 since the beginning of the year. The outbreaks have occurred in several regions of the province.

Cases in April indicated the outbreak of the virus was sparked by people who had returned from vacations in France, but subsequent cases appear to be of local origin.
Symptoms of measles:
  • Can take about 10 to 12 days to appear.
  • Usually include fever, cough, runny nose, conjuctivitis(pink eye) and rash.
  • The most serious complications are severe diarrhea, ear infections, pneumonia, blindness, and encephalitis (swelling of the brain) which may lead to death.
Transmission:
  • Measles is spread by airborne droplets (sneezing or coughing).
  • You can also catch measles by coming into contact with secretions from the nose or throat of a person who is infected.
  • Infected individuals are generally contagious four days before and four days after a rash first appears.
MMR Vaccine

  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Rubella (German measles)
