Problems following hip replacement surgery

Posted by Susan T.

A 75 yr old male family member with a history of gout, DM, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension.  Previous surgeries include disk surgery and bil knee replacements.

He is now2 weeks post-op following hip replacement surgery, and experiencing abnormal swelling of the operated legand excusiating pain in the lateral area of same leg. There appears to be a fist sized knot near the surgical area.

The surgeon has stated he has no idea what it is, and a venous doppler study was negative.

I am wondering if is is severe muscle spasming due to the postion of his leg during while on the operating table during surgery?  These symptoms did not appear until 3 days postop.

Any suggestions?
