Pregnant and Vitamin D3 supplementation

Is there a reason that Liquid D3 should not be taken by pregnant or lactating women? It is my understanding that taking up to 4,000 i.u. per day shows no adverse affects. Please let me know, as I would like to up my intake. I am currently taking the Pure Encapsulations Prenatal vitamins which provides 400 i.u. of D3. Thanks.

Hi Heather -

You may take the D3 in 4,000 IU to 5,000 IU doses when pregnant and lactating.

I recommend that you get your D3 levels checked now and again in 3 to 5 months.

Pure Encapsulations Liquid D3 contains 1,000 IU per drop.

We have another Liquid Vitamin D3 by RX Vitamins that contains 2,000 IU per drop and is less expensive. It is also as pure. I personally use this

I am pregnant & nursing my 2 yr old toddler. Do you still recommend 4,000 - 5,000 IU per day? Also, what would you suggest for my toddler? Supplementing or strictly from nursing?

I will have my midwife check my levels in 3 months as well.

Quick question about B12 as well. I take the PreNatal Nutrients by Pure Encapsulations, but wanted to add a B12 supplement as well due to the high folic acid. What do you suggest & how much.

Hi Heather -

Breastfeeding will pass the vitamin D3 to your toddler. This is why it is recommended now by many to supplement with 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 when pregnant or breastfeeding.

Great to hear your midwife will check your D3 levels in a few months.

B12: Always go for methylcobalamin which is the superior form of B12. Cyanocobalamin is good but not the best.

Place 1-3 ml under your tongue as you or your midwife feel as necessary. It is best to take it more often than one large dose. This way you will absorb more of the B12.

Make sure you keep taking the Folic acid while taking the B12.

I do recommend also that you get a quality fish oil to encourage healthy brain development in your toddler. A great tasting one that he/she would like is Frutol. My boys love it.

Follow the instructions on the bottle for guidance. Give with meals.

One last thing is to supplement your toddler with a probiotic. I recommend that you provide HLC Neonate since he is still breastfeeding. Loads of research show probiotics given early in life are key to a healthy overall immune function. Consider giving your toddler twice the recommended dose on the bottle - thus, give him/her 2 billion per day. Once or twice a day should be fine.

For you, consider taking the Cod Liver Oil. It tastes great - I personally use it daily along with my wife. We take it straight following meals or we put in a smoothie. If you prefer capsules, consider Ultra EPA/DHA With Essential Oil of Orange

Once your toddler gets a bit older to 4 yrs old, consider providing a multivitamin for him/her as well. My boys take the Pedianutrients by Pure Encapsulations

I started my boys on it when they were three. If they could not swallow it, I used the powdered form.
