Part of the fun of small town practice is that most of your patients either are related or know each other. Sometimes these relationships lead to quite a tangled web.
Currently I'm seeing two patients who were having an extramarrital affair together until his wife found out. The wife is also a patient in the office, but she sees one of my partners. While obviously I am saddened and distressed by this, I have to admit that some sick part of me has become enthralled in the drama of all of this. There's the conflict between my two patients and are they really going to call the affair off. There's the utter dejection and anger from the wife who found out her husband had cheating. There's the anticipation of wondering when the girlfriend and the wife will run into each other in this small town. It's all very Jerry Springer.
Before you know it I'll be watching tabloid TV and reading the Enquirer .
