normally low blood pressure that jumps into stroke levels...what could be the cause?

my friend has normally low b.p. (112/70) but the last few months she has had a few episodes where it jumps into stroke levels.  her drs. are puzzled.  my mom had a similar problem 25-30 years ago.  she went to mayo clinic and duke univ. and neither could help her.  after trying several  b.p. meds, they finally found one that would keep her b.p. at normal levels all the time.  seeing as that was so many years ago, i was hoping that they'd know more now to help my friend.  we live in a small town (not a lot of choices for drs.) so i thought i'd look on here.  thanks for any help
