Gilmartin had come under fire because of Merck's lackluster financial performances in recent years and, more recently, its Vioxx controversy. Merck (NYSE:MRK) pulled Vioxx off the market last year after studies linked the arthritis drug to increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage and stomach bleeding. The company is now facing more than 2,300 lawsuits from Vioxx patients.
Dr. David Graham of the FDA’s Office of Drug Safety said last year that Vioxx was estimated to be responsible for between 88,000 and 139,000 heart attacks—30 to 40% of which resulted in deaths. So 2,300 lawsuits sounds like the tip of the iceberg.
Not a problem I would enjoy stepping into!
If you were taking Vioxx or any other COX-2 inhibitors, you should really look at using a natural, high-quality systemic enzyme instead. Personally, I have used Wobenzym and Vitalzym in the past but didn't like the fact that I had to take so many pills (20 or more at a time!). Greater benefit can be derived from Jigsaw Health Essential Blend Systemic Enzymes in fewer pills. This is a new formula of systemic enzymes with some exciting clinical research that is soon to be published.
