New Funds for Polio Eradication

Poliomyelitis (commonly known as Polio) is a viral infectious disease. Most infected with the virus experience no symptoms at all. The virus will infect the central nervous system in about 1 in 200 individuals, causing muscle weakness and paralysis. Different types of paralysis can occur, but the most common form results in paralysis of one leg. Children and young adults are most commonly affected. Jonas Salk developed the first vaccine in 1952 and with Albert Sabin’s vaccine the number of polio cases worldwide has greatly decreased. Continue Reading »
