New Anti-Clotting Pill Decreases Risk of Heart Attack & Stroke

A new study in Lancet evaluated the safety and efficacy of rivaroxaban (an anti-clotting medication) in  3,491 patients with heart disease risk. The researchers found rivaroxaban to be effective at lowering the incidence of heart attack, stroke and death. Rivaroxaban is an oral medication which blocks a blood clotting factor called factor Xa. Earlier studies found rivaroxaban effective at preventing deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs) after orthopedic surgery, but there was some concern regarding the risk of bleeding.
