MICHAEL JACKSON DIES OF CARDIAC ARREST – WHAT IS CARDIAC ARREST ?

Posted Jun 26 2009 7:10pm

Michael Jackson is dead. This news has spread like a fire in the jungle. According to media reports, Pop star Michael Jackson had died at age of 50 after suffering from a cardiac arrest, last afternoon at his Holmby Hills home. The paramedics were not able to revive him.

Reports said that, they responded to a 911 call from Jackson’s home and when they reached home, he was not breathing. The paramedics performed a CPR and rushed him to UCLA Medical Center, where the hospital, due to privacy rules, could not confirm that.

Now, a question arises, What is a cardiac arrest ? In, simple terms, cardiac arrest occurs, when the heart stops working properly. It is quite different from a heart attack, but heart attack, may also be one of the reason.

In medical terminology, a cardiac arrest, is referred to as cardiopulmonary arrest or circulatory arrest. This is the abrupt cessation of normal circulation of the blood due to failure of the heart to contract effectively during systole. This blocked blood circulation obstructs the delivery of oxygen to all parts of the body, which may cause victims to lose consciousness and stop normal breathing, although agonal breathing may still occur. Brain injury may also occur, if this cardiac arrest is untreated for more than 5 minutes. In some cases, it may also lead to death. This is called sudden cardiac death (SCD).

Experts have revealed that the main cause of cardiac arrest, is usually an abnormality in the heart rhythm (arrhythmia), that leads to the malfunctioning of the heart’s electrical system. This is also known as ventricular fibrillation, that is when rapid, erratic electrical impulses cause the ventricles to quiver uselessly instead of pumping blood. Without an effective heartbeat, the blood pressure plummets, cutting off blood supply to your vital organs.

This arrhythmias actually does not occur on its own. It may be due to some external trigger, such as an electrical shock, the use of illegal drugs, or trauma to the chest at just the wrong time of the heart’s cycle (commotio cordis).

The CPR, is a system that helps to keep the blood flowing, but takes an electrical shock to the heart, either from electrical paddles called defibrillator or from an internal heart device, to shock the heart back to a normal rhythm.
