Low-Salt Heart Attack

Posted May 06 2011 7:58pm

I saw a couple media reports on a new sodium study.  The study showed that lowering salt actually increased the risk of a heart attack.  This is in contradiction to previous studies.  I haven't had time to read through the study, but the results of this study don't seem inconceivable to me.

The normal Paleo stance is to use no added salt.   However, I have used a little bit of added sea salt with dinner for many years now.  I don't do this based on any scientific data, but solely because I feel better with a little salt in my diet.

The latest Paleo diet reconstruction shows that the diet was more shore-based than previously thought.  With shore-based foods comes salt in my mind.  Who knows, maybe down the road the research will show that more sodium consumption has positive health benefits.

I liked this quote from the one of the study's authors:

"If one lowers sodium intake to lower blood pressure, this change in sodium activates several systems (including the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system) that conserve sodium, and those systems are implicated in disease processes such as damaging the arterial wall and kidneys."

This implies that there is an optimal range for sodium intake, and that consuming either too little or too much can cause health problems.
