Light Emitting Bandaid to Treat Skin Cancer

Posted Nov 04 2009 10:06pm

Polymertronics, a medical electronics company focused on photodynamic therapy, has developed the PDT device to treat a variety of skin conditions. The device can been worn like a plastar bandage and match the shape of the area being treated. Any skin lesion which can be treated with a photosensitive cream, such as acne, actinic keratosis, psoriasis, basal or squamous cell carcinoma, could be treated with this therapy. After application of the photosensitive cream, the PDT is applied directly on the lesion. The lesion is then irradiated with appropriate wavelengths of light for deep skin penetration. This type of light therapy will activate photosensitive drugs, offering a non-surgical treatment for a variety of skin conditions.

Polymertronics is a start up company developing light weight, light emitting plastics for medical applications, specifically for the treatment of skin conditions. The company’s additional trade name, Diamond Photonics, develops light emitting diodes systems, better known as LED.
