Jump Up, Jump Up And Get Down

Posted Jul 19 2010 4:21pm

I came across a couple studies ( here and here ) that look at the effects of jumping.  Both programs found a benefit of jumping on bone development in children.  One study showed that the benefits were still there three years later.

From there, I happened to see some studies on trampolines.  This is clearly a case of where modern technology makes things worse.  There are a whole slew of studies showing the danger of trampolines for children.  Most of the injuries were from falls off the equipment or the equipment breaking.

However, one study showed that the heightened jumping from trampolines is also a problem.  The study found that adolescents who trained on the trampoline had urinary issues that were often still present years later.

When it comes to jumping, it looks like it's best to stick with normal jumping on natural surfaces.
