Is Laser Hair Removal Right For You

Posted Apr 23 2010 4:23pm

There are many methods of hair removal and all of them have their pros and cons. Although common in salons, waxing is known to be particularly painful although it takes a long time for the hair to regrow. While shaving is the quickest and least painful, it often leaves stubble instead of smooth skin. However there is another alternative to removing unsightly hair and which will leave your legs silky smooth, laser hair removal. However before you go rushing off for treatment and to find a specialist you should first ask yourself if the procedure is right for you?

Determine if laser hair removal is right for your skin type

The first thing you should take into account when considering this type of treatment is to determine the type of skin you have. If there is a very big difference between the color of your skin and hair then the laser can be turned higher and this will give a better effect. This means that if you were to have very fair skin while having black or very dark brown hair then the laser treatment could be higher than someone with blonde hair and light skin. Those with black hair will come out better, and then dark brown, followed by brown and blonde. Those who have ginger coloring or grey would not benefit much from laser treatment, so others options would be more advisable. If you have Mediterranean, middle or far eastern skin then you can still have the treatment but the treatment must be given with extra care. However if your skin is any darker then this then treatment wouldn’t be advisable due to the skin absorbing too much of the laser energy which would be harmful for the skin. Other than this both men and women can have laser treatment and all parts of the body can have the laser removal treatment.

Laser treatment is a relatively new technology and as such research into the treatment has been conducted although not thourghly. What scientists do know about it is that the hair follicles are not completely destroyed during the process. The fact of the matter is that the majority of people who have undergone laser hair removal have experienced hair re-growth within 1 year of having the treatment.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Laser hair removal is considered to be a safe alternative to shaving or waxing and indeed the results do last a lot longer than both. The laser that is used in the treatment isn’t known to be cancer forming and it goes no deeper than a few millimeters into the surface of the skin. However when having therapy goggles must be worn, as the laser is dangerous to and can damage the eyes. The treatment does cause some discomfort during the actual process but people have said that the pain felt is less than that of waxing and is tolerable throughout the treatment. If you are having the laser treatment on sensitive areas then a cooling gel or anesthetic will be used on the area to be treated.
