Insulin Speculation III

Posted Nov 17 2008 9:10pm

I think Gary Taubes convincingly showed that high insulin levels are the culprit behind the obesity epidemic.  Now I'm wondering if, in a similar way, insulin is the key to muscle growth.  If high levels of insulin lead to weight gain, maybe it's just a matter of redirecting this weight gain via resistance training to muscle instead of fat stores.

My own experience is starting to lead me to this conclusion.  As I've mentioned recently, I've been eating a good bit more but am not gaining any weight.  Apparently, this happens to others who follow a Paleo-style diet as well.  Adding more fat adds more calories, but these calories may be wasted away by biological processes.  I'm almost wondering if insulin is a "prerequisite" for weight gain.

Just as the calorie model is not really the answer to weight loss, I'm starting to think it's not the answer to weight gain (muscle gain) as well.  The secret may again be connected to the hormonal effects of the food that is consumed.
