Infants and colic

Posted Dec 20 2011 4:52pm

One of the most common problems with kids is colic.  Colic is defined as: If your baby cries about the same time each day and nothing you do seems to offer comfort, your baby may have colic. Colic is often defined as crying more than three hours a day, three days a week for more than three weeks in an otherwise well-fed, healthy baby. What is most important for the diagnosis to be made is sustained crying in an otherwise healthy baby for a regular period of the day lasting for several weeks.   ~  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/colic/DS00058

The Mayo clinic offers this treatment:

Colic improves on its own, often by age 3 months. In the meantime, there are few treatment options. Gas-relief medications, such as simethicone (Gas-X Infant Drops, Infants’ Mylicon Gas Relief, others), haven’t proved very helpful.  No mention of chiropractic care.

Some research suggests that treatment with probiotics — substances that help maintain the natural balance of “good” bacteria in the digestive tract — can soothe colic. More research is needed, however, to determine the effects of probiotics on colic.

Talk to your baby’s doctor before giving your baby any medication to treat colic.

Being a parent myself, this isn’t good enough.  Sorry to make that so blunt.  But it is the truth.  When a baby is crying you become more on edge.  Your spouse is more on edge.  Tension runs high and people get short with each other.  This often leads to more stress and anxiety.  Here is a paper that can offer another form of treatment the Mayo Clinic seems to have disregarded:   http://www.scopus.com/record/display.url?eid=2-s2.0-56949086157&origin=inward&txGid=XaE8PMMleQ_VPj2CY9_LoRy%3a2

This journal article states: Four weeks after completion of the treatment trial, colic had resolved in 82% of the SMT (spinal manipulation therapy) group.  The authors also noted at two weeks of care there was a significant reduction in hours a day crying.

Now what about when kids get past three months and they still cry like this?  Is it possible colic can last past three months?  I think so.  Chiropractic care is the only thing that has shown to be beneficial to parents suffering from a having a child with colic.  Yes, the parents to suffer!
