I have an open red sore on my left tonsil. It has some white stuff around it, but it is clearly open. What could it be?

The sore showed up over night. When I woke up this morning it hurt to swallow as if I had strep throat, but only on one side. When I looked in the mirror I saw this 4 mm red open sore on my left tonsil. There seemed to be some white stuff around it as well. I am nervous that it could be something serious.
