I went to the G.P. I didn't cry this time. I think my exhausted bawling was spent. She believed I was dehydrated, febrile, and tachycardic. She called my Consultant. I was to go up to the hospital. I went home first to procrastinate then marvellous Fifi drove me up. Back to E.D then the ward. The usual story bloods, I.V fluids etc. Originally the House Surgeon didn't believe I needed any fluids. He didn't examine me or anything nor had blood results as they just had been taken, he just stood at the end of the bed. "I said oh o.k because that's what I was told I was coming in here for"(I was told it was bad to give Gentimycin to a dehydrated patient by the G.P who had spoken to the Consultant, that's why I had to go in.) Then I receivedGentimycin the following morning at 2a.m. I was still suffering from diarrhoea, vomited at the smell of the dinner being served up, and still had a pounding headache. I slept alot. The team came around the next morning, not my usual Consultant though. I asked again about probiotics (my G.P asked me, to ask the hospital about them), they said they would look into it. Also I was asked if I took a certain diarrhoea drug, I said no as the last time I took that particular drug I ended up in hospital with severe side effects. So they charted it anyway, kindly offering it to me later. The Consultant didn't even know I had a Neobladder. They again mentioned me being on long term A. Bs. That's was where my whining started and when I mentioned the probiotics. The bladder leakage? No one wanted to talk to me about that. Anyway the day wore on and my blood pressure was dropping so they upped my fluids. It was 92/50 at one stage, and stayed around a hundred and below consistently during the day, and over night. I was still having nasty stomach cramps and slept most of the day and the night.
I celebrated New years by sitting outside briefly and some hooligans yarhooed past the Hospital shouting out "Happy New Year". I grumbled moodily under my breath that this had better not be an an omen for what's to come. I do have some bloody great positive plans for this year. On a positive note at least I wont be nursing a hangover like tthe majority of the rest of the planet:) They decided to not give me Gentamycin again this morning, but gave me the long term trimithroprim I was to start on. My temperature finally got down to a more normal range for me of just over 36c. I basically had not eaten from last Sunday due to nausea, diarrhea etc. When I walked around my heart would race and had been doing so for days. When I woke this morning my face was all puffy but the headache not so bad. Home time. When I asked about the Probiotics that the Consultant said he will look into, it hadn't been done. I said I didn't want to take the long term meds until I was on the Probiotics. The registrar argued an evidence based point about Probiotics, and the Trimithroprim an in low doses should not effect me. I said " If my body has already been stripped of good bacteria through the Norfloxicin, Ciprofloxacin, and Gentimycinwouldn't taking the Trimithropim still effect me?" She didn't seem to think so. She argued I was now to be given a 'baby dose' not the dose my Consultant wanted me on. She said she understood what I was getting at over the above debate. But I was to take the long term A. Bs any way otherwise the consequences will be possible sepsis. I tried to stand my ground and ask for the Probiotics before taking the Trimithroprim. She said she will have to contact my Consultant when he is back at work, as they are all on holiday. Nice one. I left.
My wish for the new year is for all Doctors to check the notes before seeing the patient if they don't know them. For them to grow ears and listen to their patients. Its hard to feel reassured when they all say a different thing, all in the space of hours, and when they don't even know what type of surgery I had nor the extent of it. On a positive note the nurses were delightful, the ward seemed alot more relaxed. Yet I still hated being there.
