Help Your Child Stay Active Through Good Shoes

Posted Aug 14 2010 6:00am
Does your child complain of foot pain?

Do they not like to run or participate in sports?

Often foot pain is related to the quality of shoes that a child wears.  As we near the end of summer and the beginning of school, many of us are looking for back-to-school shoes.  The APMA has released information that is designed to help every parent get quality shoes for their child .  I agree with APMA President Kathleen M. Stone, DPM, who said: “If a child’s feet hurt, they will be far less likely to participate in outdoor sports and other activities that keep them moving and physically fit.”   Good shoes will help them stay active and may even help reduce childhood obesity.  I recommend at least these three recommendations from the APMA on finding a good shoe
  1.  Check the shoe using three tests

  2. Measure a child's foot regularly, because feet can change quickly.  The shoe should be 1/2 inch longer than the longest toe (about the length of the thumb nail).

  4. No "break-in" period required.  Your child's shoes should be comfortable immediately.
