Heart Rate

Posted Nov 17 2008 9:11pm 2 Comments

I bought a Polar heart rate monitor the other week.  I was curious as to what my maximum heart rate is, and what it is during exercise.  I'm not one of those people who think a heart rate monitor is a required tool for exercise, but I thought it might be a good long-term purchase.  A person's maximum heart rate is supposed to decrease with age, so I will be curious to see if that happens for me over time.

Today during my pyramid interval training, my heart rate actually got up to 180 bpm during the second 400 meter run.  It was also interesting to see that the 50 and 100 meter runs did not raise my heart rate near as much as the 400 meter runs.

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to record my heart rate in different activities so at least I'll have a baseline to measure from.

I got one for Christmas I have the same question as I would think it would be different for everyone, woudnt it? I am a little scared that its going to tell me Im not training hard enough. Even though thats why I have one,

I do not think the heart rate can tell you whether you're not exercising enough... Yes, everyone is different and everyone has his own maximum heart rate to start with.

I personally use Heart Wizard tool which I bought from http://www.healthreviser.com which also evaluates my fitness level every week. You actually do not train enought if there is no increase in your fitness level ;) The Heart Wizard actually also displays my heart rate target zones. So for weight management I have my min/max heart rate zone as well as for cardop training. If you haven't been to the gym for a long time do not try to hit 180 bpm!!!
