Health Tip: Signs That You May Have Pinkeye

Conjunctivitis, commonly called pinkeye, is an infection or inflammation of the membrane that lines the eyelids.

The cause is most often a virus, but a bacterial infection, allergies, exposure to chemicals or use of contact lenses also may be triggers.

Pinkeye is not only uncomfortable, but usually very contagious.

The ADAM Encyclopedia says these are common symptoms of pinkeye
  • Red eyes.
  • Crusty eyelids that develop overnight.
  • Eyes that itch and tear up more than usual.
  • A feeling of grit in the eyes.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Sensitivity to light.

Health Tip: Protect Your Eyes From Corneal Abrasion

Carelessly handled contact lenses, a low-hanging tree branch or a fingernail used to relieve an itch can scratch the eye's cornea, resulting in what is called a corneal abrasion.

The American Academy of Family Physicians offers these suggestions to reduce your risk of this injury
  • Wear goggles when near machinery that could injure your eyes.
  • Cut your fingernails regularly.
  • Trim low-hanging tree branches.
  • Clean your contact lenses properly each day, and be careful when placing them on your eye.
  • Always take contact lenses out before going to sleep.
