Last Wed., a plethora of Donate Life Illinois volunteers, yPOD members, recipients and donor family members stormed Allstate Arena for the DePaul v. Syracuse men's basketball game in conjunction with Get Game. Give Life. As we rolled into the arena, a security guard stopped to ask me if I was a player (I'm 6'5)....believe me, I was a bit tempted to sneak on and live out some childhood dreams, but alas there were folks to educate and register!
The event was a blast and we were even so lucky as to have Morgan D' Organ (something looks a bit different these days about ole Morgan...we'll post more on that later) make an appearance to draw curious looks, raise eyebrows and serve as the introduction to discussing organ donation and the importance of re-registering .
At halftime, recipients and donor family members joined Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White on the court to tout the importance of the issue and encourage crowd members to register.
All in all, a great night and a true honor to finally meet face-to-face with a number of recipients that we've been communicating with for the past couple years ( Steve ! , Jen !). I was even treated to some "war stories" from a couple of lung transplant recipients as they detailed their battles with cystic fibrosis and proudly showed off their scars...marking a return to normal daily routines...fresh, full breathes of life.
Special thanks to all of you that came out to help!
