GERD that won't go away after peptic ulcer

Posted by Katherine B.

A couple months ago I was diagnosed with a duodenal ulcer. I took Amoxicillin and Biaxin for two weeks and Prevacid for 8 weeks. Several symptoms of the ulcer went away after the courses of antibiotics; bloating, severe gas, intense gnawing hunger pangs, etc. However, I am still having horrible GERD symptoms, which I did not have before the ulcer. I burp up bile, sometimes have heartburn, I have a burning pain in my stomach and I feel hungry, constantly. Even after eating my stomach is gurgling away and feels empty. I also get this feeling of an air bubble in my stomach. I've tried Mylanta and Pepcid Complete and nothing helps. Even the Prevacid wasn't helping.

I also have nausea after eating breakfast and diarrhea for several hours. This is really ruining my quality of life. Does anyone know what's going on, or had a similar situation? Thank you!!!

Katherine, we almost have the same experience but I have been having for the last 11 years, yes 11. When I experienced GERD my doctor gave me which help solve the problem with heartburn. However, I refuse to undergo barium swallow because he did not think any peptic ulcer is present. Your increased acid could be because of the stress both mental and physical that you are undergoing. If you need some info or if you have questions, send a message hope you get well soon.

Well it's been over a year now since I was diagnosed with the ulcer. I had horrible stomach problems for a year after treatment. I went to doctor and doctor, and had several tests. I was even hospitalized and had two ct scans. Nothing has been found.

I was on PPIs for a year, but am totally off them now as they were really messing with my digestive system.

I am slightly better. I still have acid reflux and heart burn about once a week (down from every day in hell),  my stomach is no longer tender to the touch, but I still do get pain in my stomach, like I've been kicked in the stomach or pain that just makes me double over. It's worse during the night when my stomach is empty for a long time. Sometimes I still wake up around 4-5 am and need to eat a snack. Othertimes I sleep through the night but am in bad pain when I wake up.

Not really sure what to do anymore...
