Foam Rolling for Runners

Posted by Heather J.

I have a love-hate relationship with the foam roller, the three-foot long by about six-inch wide white foam tube that you may have seen lying around at your local gym. Think of the foam roller as your own personal masseuse: albeit one with strong arms and not much personality. The device can yield similar benefits as a deep tissue massage, working out tight, stiff muscles and aiding in flexibility. The roller works especially well on the IT band, which is difficult to stretch otherwise. Runner's World offers a good article with exercises for the quads, glutes, calves and other important body parts. You can pick up a foam roller of your very own at The Sports Basement in S.F. and Sunnyvale, among other locations. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-285--11556-0,00.html
