Fish Oil and Depression

Depression has been on the rise in America for decades. I think there are many reasons for this. One of the reasons is bad diet!

Could there be a connection to the fact that Americans consume way too much of the wrong kind of oil? Most experts think the ratio between Omega 6 (vegetable-type oils) and Omega 3 (primarily found in fish) is way out of balance. Most researchers believe the right balance should be either 1:1 or 2:1. Americans are typically between 10:1 and 30:1.

Here is a good article from WebMD talking about the research showing incredible breakthroughs for people with serious depression using fish oil as the main method of treatment. Andrew Stoll, M.D. of Harvard wrote a great book called The Omega 3 Connection: The Groundbreaking Antidepression Diet and Brain Program.

It really should come as no suprise that good fat could play a role in the health of the brain. The brain is over 65% fat. Most of us simply need a change of oil!
