Fat and Sugar IV

Posted Feb 11 2012 8:07pm

Here's another new study that looked at the combination of fat and sugar, this time in terms of obesity.  From the abstract:

"Our data suggest that the specific combination of saturated fat and a 30% sugar solution results in hyperphagia-induced obesity and alters hypothalamic neuropeptide expression"

This is a rat study, so the point is that sucrose and saturated fat in combination promote overeating.  Here's a graph from the study looking at body weight gain:

If it's either high-fat or high-sugar, no obesity results.  But the combination of the two, especially in a choice setting for food, leads to overeating and obesity.
