Epidemic of Vitamin D Deficiency

Posted May 20 2009 1:22pm

One of the most under-rated, misunderstood and ignored vitamins in our bodies is Vitamin D, or cholecalciferol. We have been told that Vitamin D is necessary for strong bones and little else and that only 400 units per day is sufficient. We’ve been told to stay out of the sun to avoid skin cancer and thus we make even less Vitamin D than our ancestors.

That is all changing slowly, thanks to Vitamin D researchers in the US, Canada and elsewhere, who are beginning to talk publicly about the health problems associated with vitamin D deficiency. Here’s a partial list of diseases associated with Vitamin D deficiency from one of my favorite websites on the subject –

    * adrenal insufficiency
    * Alzheimer's
    * allergies
    * autoimmune disorders including multiple sclerosis & rheumatoid arthritis
    * cancers of the colon, breast, skin and prostate
    * depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
    * diabetes, Type 1 and 2
    * gluten intolerance, lectin intolerance
    * heart disease, hypertension,
    * infertility, sexual dysfunction
    * learning and behavior disorders
    * misaligned teeth and cavities
    • metabolic syndrome, aka insulin resistance, Syndrome X
    * myopia
    * obesity
    * osteopenia, osteoporosis, osteomalacia (adult rickets)
    * Parkinson's
    * PMS
    • polycystic ovary syndrome - PCOS
    * psoriasis

I regularly test Vitamin D levels in my patients now and help them restore their often very low levels. The effects on many diseases with this simple cheap approach can be significant in my experience.

I’ll be writing much more about this essential vitamin for optimal health. Stay tuned….
