COX-2 Inhibitors May Prevent Skin Cancer

Posted Jan 12 2010 10:08pm

The anti-inflammatory medication Celebrex ® (celecoxib) may be useful in treating one of the more common types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma. Researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Oakland Research Institute assessed the effects of Celebrex ® on the development of basal cell carcinoma in 60 patients with basal cell nevus syndrome in a 3-year, double-blinded, randomized clinical trial. Basal cell nevus syndrome is a rare condition which results in the development of hundreds of cancerous lesions throughout the body. The patients taking Celebrex ® had significantly fewer cancerous lesions by the end of the study. By studying this group of high risk patients, the researchers hope to translate the findings to skin cancer in the general patient population. The increased risk of cardiovascular events is one of the concerns regarding it’s use in prevention of skin cancer. Celebrex ® is only in the second of three phases of clinical testing needed before official approval in it’s use for treating basal cell carcinoma.
