Could the flu shot cause right underarm pain?

Posted by cali1054

When I got my flu shot I immediately had pain up the muscle on my shoulder continuing up to my neck.  It was rather uncomfortable.  The next morning my right underarm was very painful.  The pain radiated down my right side and around my back.  It lasted for a couple of days.   Now a month later it has returned.  This time it has been for three days.

Disclaimer: I believe in vaccinations and am up-to-date on all mine.  Now, on to your question.  It's very unlikely that a typical flu shot could cause underarm pain.  The needle used is so short & stubby, it really can't go anywhere deep enough to damage a nerve.  However, flu shots can lead to some soreness at the injection site but this typically resolves very quickly.  Something coincidental could be going on so it's probably best to go see your family physician to get evaluated.  Good luck!
