Churg Strauss; Mood Swings And Prednisone Use

Posted Jul 27 2010 12:00am

What? What do you mean I’m moody?! I’m not moody…I’m on Prednisone!

Don’t laugh at the sentence, as this is something that some people experience while on prednisone.

At least for now, prednisone is the main ” Go To ” drug of choice when it comes to treating Churg Strauss and some of it’s other interesting complications such as Asthma.

From this point forward in this article, I am speaking to my own expierence so take this just for what it is…

I have been on this great little drug for better than two years now as I was actually using it to a much lesser extant a few months before I was diagnosed with CSS for the treatment of my Nasal Polyps, one of several pre cursors I have lived with over the years before my eventual CSS diagnosis and while I have always been somewhat ( stop laughing! ) moody, I have noticed that prednisone only makes the issue worse. But before I speak further to this let me just back this up just a bit with some other folks ( who will remain anonymous ) experiences in this area…

I have been on prednisone on and off for the past two years for UC and UC related arthritis. I am taking the drug for 10 days or so since I have an arthritis flare right now. I’ve noticed myself being very snipy towards my wonderful boyfriend, family, students, etc. Also, I take everything SO seriously and cannot relax or “let it go” when someone says something sarcastically. Normally it does not bother me when someone says something in a sarcastic manner, but I’ve taken it to heart. My boyfriend said he feels he has to watch what he says around me. He’s experienced this with me before when I was on the drug the last time. He’s so understanding about it, but it bothers me knowing I am treating people without realizing this!!! Is this normal when on prednisone?

Totally normal! I would cry at the drop of a hat while on pred (not like me) one minute and then be yelling the next!

It’s normal!!! I currently am on Predinsone 30mg. Just got off a short taper with no results. I am very moody. devil My hubby walks on eggshells with me. He said I take everything so seriously. I do. I am doing the best I can, but like you it bothers me that I can be so short with people. Sometimes I feel like I am going crazy. I feel now that I have been on it a week this time that my moods are leveling off. Not so moody and short with people as time goes on. I feel it could really be worse! Hang in there it will get better. ”

Mood changes with prednisone or other steroid treatments are common, so yes, the two could be related. In some cases, particularly at high doses, more severe mood swings and even mild depression and mania can occur. Fortunately, the effects are reversible and mood returns to normal when the dose is lowered or the prednisone course is completed. “

Okay, so I think with the above question and reply’s and or statements we have established that prednisone does indeed cause mood swings, yes even my mood swings…but I have noticed that my swings also involve some depression at times, like last Thursday while at my job…one stupid statement, said through a third party no less just made my day…for the worse!

My mood went from okay to terrible and at one point became quite depressing as I started to think about another birthday without my parents being here ( and that’s actually another different mental issue that I may share here at another time ) which led to a round of tears unseen by anyone at the workplace…but you get the idea…right?

So the next time you see someone you know being totally crazy and out of character, remember they may not be crazy..they may just be on prednisone.
