Choosing Toothpaste To Fight Bad Breath

Posted Dec 30 2010 9:47pm

It used to be that choosing toothpaste was a simple matter of going to your local market and picking between two or three popular brands. You may have had a choice of brands and varying flavors, but all in all, the toothpaste was made the same. It was to clean your teeth and to fight off tooth decay. However, these days, it is much different. One trip down the toothpaste isle will tell you that you have many choices in the toothpaste world. There are all sorts of brands, flavors, scents and colors. Some fight gum disease, some makes your teeth whiter and some claim to do it all.

So, when you have to choose toothpaste to fight off bad breath, what is the right choice? Do you go with the brand your mom always bought you, or do your branch out a bit and try some of the newer varieties. One thing is certain, when you choose toothpaste; you want to make sure that you choose the kind that will keep your teeth and gums healthy and clean.

Reading the toothpaste labels: When you go shopping for toothpaste, the first thing you will want to do is to read the labels. You should always buy the kind that is ADA approved. ADA stands for the “American Dental Association” and when it has this label, then you know that it has undergone research and meets certain criteria. Once you have found the ADA approved toothpaste, then you can start choosing which ones are right for you.

It is true that the toothpaste that you want will be the one that gets the job done. Some people have very sensitive gums and teeth and there is toothpaste just for those people. Toothpaste that is labeled for sensitive teeth will have a special ingredient in it to desensitize the area and make it easier to brush. There are many brands on the market that are for this very purpose.

For those who are prone to cavities, check out the newer antimicrobial toothpaste that are popular. These are the ones that are generally labeled “complete” or “total”. These toothpastes will have an antibacterial agents that will help fight off cavities, even in those little crevices. They are made to fight gum disease, which will help you with bad breath.

If you have a lot of plaque build up, then you may consider using tartar control toothpaste. These all contain the ingredient called sodium pyrophosphate. While it will not remove existing plaque, it can help control future build up of this yucky stuff. The best thing to do when using this type of toothpaste is to start it right after you have your teeth cleaned at the dentist.

Another very popular type of toothpaste is the one that contains baking soda. Baking soda has long been known to help whiten the teeth because it is a natural abrasive. While it has been known to cause gum irritation after prolonged use, it can be very handy to cleaning and freshening the breath.
