can my thyroid effect my blood pressure

My blood pressure is very high. During my recent consultation with my doctor she noticed that my neck was enlarged and then stated I had two swollen thyroids. WHAT IS A THYROID AND WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH MY BLOOD PRESSUSRE
