Cajun Squirrel Crisps Anyone?

Posted Jan 11 2009 4:21pm

Are you fed up of the boring run-of-the-mill flavours like cheese and onion and ready salted? Then fear not, as those lovely people over at Walkers have decided to launch some new and rather unusual flavours - Cajun squirrel anyone? Or how about chilli and chocolate?

As of today, it will be the job of the crisp fiends to decide their favorite of a weird and wonderful bunch, as Walkers six crazy new flavours are launched as part of the competition they ran last year, looking for something new to spice up the crisp world. Among the two already mentioned, other crisps to look forward to are crispy duck, onion bhaji, fish and chips and builder’s breakfast.

The flavour with the most votes will become a fully fledged new addition to the Walkers crisps family and will go into full time production - the public have the chance to vote for their preference until May. Over 1.2 million people entered the unusual competition.

The top six who were responsible for the above flavors will each receive £10,000.

The top prize for the winning flavour is £50,000 and annual royalties of 1 per cent on sales of the product.

The majority of the shortlisted entries have taken inspiration from flavours from around the world, or from good old fashioned British grub.

The woman behind the fish and chip flavor is 45 year old social worker and vegetarian Jane Hallam from Sheffield.

She chose the flavor as it means she can get a taste of the fish from using herbs and spices without breaking her veggie pledge.

Online marketing expert, 26 year old Martyn Wright, is the only man to make it to the top six and was responsible for the Cajun squirrel flavour. Animal lovers will be pleased to hear there is no real squirrel in the flavor.

He came up with the idea after seeing squirrel on a menu and figured the public would be keen to know what it tasted like,

“Although the idea might sound bizarre, it really works,” he said.

Vicky Howard, a 21 year mapmaker from Northwich, Cheshire, came up with the crispy duck and hoisin variety.

The builder’s breakfast was thought up by 26 year old housewife Emma Rushin from Belper in Derbyshire. She wants to put her winnings towards a deposit for a house. She said, “First you get a hint of sausage, then egg, bacon, and last the buttery toast.”

The top six winning entries were created in Walkers laboratories by food technologists using herbs and spices - head of flavour department James Stilman confirmed all the ingredients were “ natural flavour compounds” and did not contain e-numbers.

The builder’s breakfast contains salt, pepper, sage, barley, malt extract, butter, citric acid, dried garlic and flavouring, while Cajun squirrel flavour was created using mkil, lactose, salt, sugar, dried onion, dried garlic, dried lemon juice, cardamom, ginger, coriander chilli, cumin, oregano, thyme, allspice, parsley, paprika extract and flavouring.

Famous food mixologist Heston Blumenthal said, “We’ve had an incredible response and sifting through the entries has been quite incredible.”

The crisps will be on sale for 38p a packet and the public can vote until 1 May by text or online at www.walkers.co.uk
