Brushing Teeth

Posted Apr 21 2010 12:00am

My daughter is fed by g-tube for medical reasons.  She has a sensory processing disorder that results in her being quite orally aversive. This means brushing teeth is a challenge.

I’ve mentioned before that one thing I do that helps is to count to 10 or 20 while I brush her teeth. That way she knows it is coming to an end.  I also use a small toothbrush to keep from overwhelming her with sensory input.

Lately I’ve found another big help.  I have her brush her own teeth first using this knobby toothbrush you see below.  Then I use the little toothbrush that came with it.  It works because she has desensitized her mouth by doing her own brushing first. Isn’t that cool?!
