While I'm far from being a true surgeon, I do like to go into the OR. There's something formal and ritualistic about scrubbing, gowning, and gloving that feels like it connects me with generations of doctors.
Today the operation was a repeat C-section for a patient of mine (her last baby weighed over 10 lbs). The last time I checked the statistics about 30% of family doctors deliver babies and 6% act as primary surgeon at section. While I'm in the former group, I can't count myself in the latter; just an assistant here. I'm lucky enough to have a good relationship with an obstetrician who welcomes having me follow these women throughout their pregnancy and then we do the C-section together when its time for that.
Newborn baby boy delivered weighing over 8 lbs, but less than double digits. Parents are overjoyed. I had a fun time. Obstetrician got to do an operations without having to follow the patient. Everyone won this one today.
