I'm not one for Christmas miracles, so I won't say this counts as one, but a happy ending it is nonetheless. In my last post I told the story of a couple married sixty plus years with a fascinating life story whose end together I thought had finally come.
The wife I had discharged from the hospital to a skilled nursing facility in the morning and by that evening I had admitted her husband with pneumonia and a heart attack. Quickly he was intubated and admitted to the ICU. At 92 and medically so much going against him I truly didn't believe he would survive the next forty eight hours.
I was wrong. He held his own and even improved over the next forty eight hours. The next day his pressors were stopped and he was taken off the ventilator. Obviously weakened by the complicated hospitalization and illness the house staff recommended he get some rehab which he initially declined.
How did they convince him to get a little extra care before going back home? They found a bed for him at the same SNF as his wife. So on Christmas Eve he was discharged from the hospital to again spend the holiday with his bride.
