The ten most essential tools for vegetable gardening are:

  • spade
  • fork
  • trowel
  • hoe
  • potting compost
  • watering can
  • measuring tape
  • labels
  • string
  • bamboo canes

Some of the items on the list can be substituted with cheaper or more easily available options. For example, sticks blown from trees in the wind can be used for marking seed rows instead of bamboo canes, but it is always useful to have a few bamboos in store, just in case nothing else can be found.

Similarly, the soil making up mole hills is often used for planting seeds. But potting compost gives more reliable results.

Vegetable gardeners soon learn which tools they rely on, and build their own list of their ten favourite tools.

The Hula Hoe is new to me, but I get the idea. Sounds good!
My all time favorite gardening tool is the Hula Hoe. It has made weeding so easy and takes half the time now. I wish they made them in hand tool size, too, for those tight spots.
Having the right tools makes the job so much easier! Tools are good things to go on your birthday list!
i need to get myself some of those tools
There's so much involved with gardening, it seems. I imagine it takes years to get it right down to a science (so that one doesn't even have to think about what they're doing before they do it.) The thing about hard work and learning over time is that the fruits (or veggies) that come of your labour are that much more wonderful to you!
