I had done quite a bit of strenuous work in the pool garden yesterday morning, finally stopping when the heat got to be too much. And besides, my back was killing me. I allowed myself a long rest and a hot bath before I went out into the kitchen garden later in the afternoon. The heat had abated somewhat and a cool breeze blew as I picked pole beans and watched a blue and black swallowtail butterfly flutter about, landing on a flower here and there. For those few moments, everything was perfectly in harmony within and without me. I get moments like that every now and then, most often when I'm gardening, and I always wish there was a way to hold onto them. But I suppose it's at least partly their ephemeral nature that makes them so special.
