Make it last! Tips to keeping fruits and vegetables fresh

Posted by LucyK

Fruits and vegetables don't have a very a long storage life but here are a few tips that may help you make your fruit and produce last longer:

Make sure that your fridget is maintained at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

Remove broken stems (green beans, asparagus) or brown leaves and cut stems at an angle and place them in jar of water. Remember not to wash your veggies until you're about to use them.

Dry any water or moisture from your vegetables and keep them in a plastic bag with a layer of paper towel to soak up any necessary moisture. Remember to keep them in the crisper drawer of fridge.

Separate different types of produce and don't overcrowd them.

Avoid washing fruits until you're ready to use. Grapes, strawberries, blueberries and other fruit should be stored in a plastic bag. For grapes, avoid pre-washing to extend the time they're edible by as much as 2 weeks.

Freezing! Slice bell peppers and onions and freeze them in a plastic bag. FYI: Mushrooms should be sautéed before freezing if you want them to last longer.

I'd love to hear about more ideas about keeping your fruits and veggies last. Let me know if you have anymore tips.
