Football Training Camp!

This week, I had the opportunity to check out the Baltimore Ravens’ Training Camp up close, as a reporter. It’s kind of a festival-like atmosphere, with games for the kids, hot dog and t-shirt stands, autograph areas and a few tents for spectators. Ravens fans are die-hard – it was over 100 degrees out on the field and nobody seemed to mind.
I took a close look at how the players, coaches and spectators kept going in the heat and Maryland humidity. There were assistant coaches who went from player to player, squirting bottles of Gatorade into their mouths. Interestingly enough, the players weren’t running to the Gatorade set up, gulping it down. I would! I looked at it longingly. The sports casters and personnel in the know were all wearing hats.
Another thing that surprised me when I got to look at the players up closes is how they are all a lot leaner than I imagined. They weren’t built like “football players”. They were lean, toned and flexible. Nobody had that meathead, thick-necked look that many high school guys think they should have.
Later in the day, Brian Billick and the rest of the coaches decided special teams practice would be indoors, in the gym. They worked on “chin to chin” defense and also, where to put their feet in relation to the other team’s feet.
